Terms of Service
Last updated 18 September 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Hoard when you use the app. Hoard is an app for metal detectorists and history hunters: it identifies your finds, records your digs, and helps you connect with clubs. By creating an account or using Hoard you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Hoard is run from the United Kingdom. You can reach us at [email protected]. How we handle your data is set out separately in our Privacy Policy.
1. Who can use Hoard
You must be at least 16 years old to use Hoard. You are responsible for keeping your login details safe and for everything done through your account.
2. Identifications are a best guess, not a valuation
Hoard's identifications and any prices it shows are an informed best guess by an automated system, and prices are based on comparable historical sale and auction data. They are not a formal identification, a professional authentication, or an official valuation, and they should not be relied on for buying, selling, insurance, or any legal or financial decision. For anything that matters, get an opinion from a qualified expert. Prices shown are rough market examples only.
3. Detecting responsibly and the law
Metal detecting is subject to the law and to landowner permission. Hoard is a tool, not a permission. You are responsible for:
- Getting the landowner's permission before detecting or digging on any land.
- Following the law where you are, including reporting requirements such as the Treasure Act in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the rules on Treasure Trove in Scotland.
- Staying away from protected sites, such as Scheduled Monuments, unless you have the right consent.
- Recording your finds responsibly, for example through the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
Map layers, routes and research shown in Hoard are provided as guidance only and may be incomplete or out of date. They do not tell you that a place is legal or safe to detect.
4. The free trial
New accounts get Hoard's Pro features free for 14 days, up to a total of 10 scans across the trial. The trial needs no card and is not a paid subscription — nothing is charged, and it simply ends after 14 days or once the 10 scans are used, after which your account continues on the free tier. To limit repeat trials, we may reduce trial access where several accounts come from the same device.
5. Subscriptions
Hoard offers paid plans (currently Standard and Pro), each available as a monthly or annual subscription. The current features and prices are shown in the app before you buy.
- Payment. Subscriptions are billed through a secure third-party payment provider. Hoard never sees or stores your card number.
- Automatic renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period (each month or each year) at the price shown when you subscribed, until you cancel.
- Cancelling. You can cancel at any time from the billing section in the app, which opens your billing management page. When you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then does not renew.
6. Club payments
Clubs on Hoard can collect payments — for example dig fees or membership dues — from their members. Where they do:
- The payment is between you and the club. The club, not Hoard, sets the price and decides what the payment is for.
- Payments are processed through our payment provider, and clubs receive money through that provider's connected-account system. Hoard may take a small platform fee on club payments, shown at the time.
- Refunds for a club payment are the club's decision. A club admin can issue a refund through Hoard.
7. Refunds
If the law gives you a right to a refund, that right always applies. Beyond that:
- For subscriptions, you can cancel at any time to stop future charges; we do not generally refund the current period once it has started, unless we are required to. If you think you were charged in error, email us.
- For club payments, refunds are handled by the club (see section 6).
8. Your content
You keep ownership of the photos, finds, notes and posts you add to Hoard. By adding them you allow us to store and process them so the app can work — for example, sending a photo to be identified, or showing a post you make in the community feed. You are responsible for what you upload, and you must not upload anything unlawful, or that you do not have the right to share.
9. Community rules
When you post or comment in the community, be respectful. Do not post content that is abusive, illegal, or that reveals a sensitive detecting location that is not yours to share. We may hide or remove content, or suspend an account, that breaks these rules.
10. Things we cannot promise
We work to keep Hoard running well, but we provide it "as is". We do not promise it will always be available, error-free, or that an identification will be correct. As far as the law allows, Hoard is not liable for loss that comes from relying on an identification or price, from a detecting trip, or from a dealing between you and a club or another user. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
11. Ending your use of Hoard
You can stop using Hoard and delete your account at any time from Settings. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or the law. If your account is closed, any active subscription is handled as described in section 5.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If we do, we will change the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will let you know in the app. Continuing to use Hoard after a change means you accept the updated terms.
13. Law and contact
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the courts of England and Wales. Questions about these terms: [email protected].
